Esme by Meghan Kelly is a draping, cabled cardigan, perfect for fall and spring weather.  Knit in pieces from the bottom up, Esme features stockinette body and sleeves, fronts with wide reversible ribbed cables, a dramatic collar, and a feminine, slightly cropped shape.  Close the cardigan with a wide lapel or crinkled cowl neckline, or leave it open to float around your hips.  The cardigan is held closed by two sets of hidden metal snaps sewn in at the end while a decorative button adds interest.

The sleeves on Esme are set-in, and the sides and sleeve caps are seamed using mattress stitch. This structure is universally flattering, provides stability, allows the back and sleeves to keep their shape, and the tailored finish balances the drama of the large collar.  The cables, while large and bold, are actually quite simple and the pattern is easy to memorize. Also, since they are worked in a knit/purl ribbing, they are reversible and look amazing with the collar folded over!

Construction Notes: When working the fronts, in order for the stitch pattern on the collar to line up, work each side for the same number of rows. Work the fronts for the same number of rows as for the back to the armholes and armhole shaping.

Make a note of what line of the chart you were on when you put the fronts on holding stitches. You’ll want to work the next row in pattern when knitting the collar and go from there.

Seam sides and sew in sleeves before picking up for the collar.
