The tenth issue explores Montana including Bozeman’s Paradise Valley, Flathead and Swan Lakes, Glacier National Park, Missoula's Bitterroot Valley & the peaks of the Sapphire Mountains.  The Montana makers within the Lookbook embody the power of a sense of place & its influence, not only from what they make, but how it is made. Montana is still so big, wild, beautiful, and desolate. The artists who have chosen to make their homes here love their place deeply and passionately, and that love is reflected in what they create.

By Hand No. 10 includes an in depth exploration of Montana Woolworks & sister company, H. A. Brewing Co, housed on the same family ranch, The Farmer's Daughter fiber company, Meghan Purcell's felted wool art, & the Aporta Shop where weaver & textile designer Noelle Sharp creates contemporary pieces.  View the internal space of Stella German Organic Bakery in Bozeman, which is a scratch sourdough bread bakery. Beaufiul woodwork is presented by the father and son canoe builders of Morley Canoes, & learn more about the jeweler behind Ruby & Revolver who uses reclaimed metal, turquoise and jasper to create wearable art.  Enjoy in depth looks at textile, yarn, & fiber by exploring the Nona & Co. macrame & Western Bound Goods waxed canvas & Pendleton wool bags.  Last but not least, enjoy a beautifully depicted article by Hannah Thiessen on Botanical Dyeing & Montana Star Quilts.

The patterns and projects in By Hand Serial Lookbook No. 10 are all inspired by the hues and textures of Montana's landscapes, and the western style of the region.

Lookbook No. 10 also includes the following projects and patterns that feature our makers' materials and sources of inspiration.  Click any link to go directly to the kit!  After all, every knitting book should come with yarn.  (Coming Soon!)

By Hand is a serial produced by Andrea Hungerford three times per year that explores locations around the country that have developed their own unique "maker communities" where people who love to make, love to learn to make, and love to support makers have found a common sense of purpose.

Each of these geographic "clusters" has its own unique characteristics, and those characteristics influence the artists who live and work there. Each issue of By Hand is a place-based celebration of these communities of makers, focused primarily on the fiber and fabric industry, as well as highlighting artists in other media who share the same philosophy as fiber and fabric artists of functional beauty. Additionally each issue includes patterns, projects, photo essays, day trips, foodie excursions, and other write-ups of aspects unique to the featured city or region.
